About West-Helsinki Light Rail
West-Helsinki Light Rail is an urban development project where the tram network in western Helsinki is being built and renewed, high-quality bike paths and municipal engineering are being built, and changes to the street environment are being implemented.
With these changes, tram line 14 will start operation in the early 2030s, running along Mannerheimintie and further through Meilahti, Munkkiniemi, Haaga, and Lassila districts to Kannelmäki. Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie will transform into urban boulevards resembling the city centre in the future.

9 Jan, 2024 The Helsinki city Urban Environment Committee approved the project plan for the West-Helsinki Light Rail.
20 Jan, 2021 The Helsinki City Council approved the general plan for the West- Helsinki Light Rail.

Schedule
The West-Helsinki Light Rail entered the development phase at the beginning of March 2025. Construction will begin gradually during the spring of 2026. Throughout 2025, the project will be advanced by developing both design and implementation solutions towards the set goals.
Street planning and other planning required for construction will start simultaneously. As part of the development phase, the target cost will be determined, setting a target outcome cost for implementation. Within the project’s impact area, residents and businesses will be informed and engaged through active interaction and enabling various meetings and active dialogue.
