Construction begins in the Haaga roundabout area on June 29 – work zones will expand in phases

Major progress will be made in the West-Helsinki Light Rail project as construction work begins in the Haaga roundabout area on Monday, June 29.

The construction areas will expand gradually. Work will first start on the eastern side of the Haaga roundabout on Bensa-asemankuja, next to the Haaganpuisto dog park enclosure, as well as on the northwestern side in Piimäenpuisto, in the area between Vihdintie and Pitäjänmäentie.

Near Bensa-asemankuja, work will begin on Monday, June 29, with the removal of asphalt and topsoil, and will also include excavation. A surcharge embankment will be built in the work area to compact the clay-based soil, and it is expected to remain in place for approximately six months.

In Piimäenpuisto, work will begin on Monday, July 6, also with topsoil removal and excavation. After soil preparation, work will proceed to the renewal of the water supply and sewer network. When work begins, one of the lanes turning onto Pitäjänmäentie will have to be closed.

According to the current schedule, excavation work in the southern part of the Haaga roundabout, between Vihdintie and Huopalahdentie, will begin on July 20.

Haaganpuisto dog park closed for two weeks

The Haaganpuisto dog enclosure will be temporarily closed for two weeks from June 29 to July 12 due to the establishment of the Bensa-asemankuja worksite and the construction of the surcharge embankment. The size of the dog park will be slightly reduced as a result of the construction. The enclosure will reopen for use no later than Monday, July 13.

The current Haaga roundabout will become the West Roundabout and West Haaga Square in the future

The Haaga roundabout area will undergo significant changes as part of the West-Helsinki Light Rail project. The surface area of the current roundabout will expand, and space will be created within it for the future West Haaga Square. The already operating light rail line 15 and the West-Helsinki Light Rail line 14 will meet at the square, enabling smooth transfers between different light rail lines.

The future West Roundabout will remain a major transport hub in Helsinki. Compared to the current Haaga roundabout, the area will change from a car-oriented roundabout into a more urban, block-like area where car traffic, public transport, and pedestrians operate on the same level. Public transport connections between Haaga and Pitäjänmäki will be strengthened, as the West-Helsinki Light Rail will enable smoother travel chains between light rail lines, buses, and commuter trains.
