Construction

The West-Helsinki Light Rail project involves the construction of an approximately 10-kilometre light rail line connecting Kannelmäki to central Helsinki. The new Tram Line 14 is scheduled to begin operating along the route in the early 2030s. The main construction works started in May 2026, following preparatory works that began in March 2026.

The cityscape will be transformed as Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie are redeveloped into attractive, boulevard-style urban streets characteristic of Helsinki’s inner city. New tram track sections will also be constructed along Topeliuksenkatu and Fredrikinkatu. Once the West Helsinki Light Rail project is completed, public transport in the western inner city will operate primarily on rail.

At the same time, the area’s municipal infrastructure will be extensively renewed, and the street environment will be upgraded. Conditions for cycling will also improve significantly through the construction of new cycle paths and bike lanes, as well as sections of the Pitäjänmäki and Munkkiniemi cycling corridors.

The West Helsinki Light Rail project will also create and redevelop public squares. The new and redesigned squares include:

• Renovation of Töölöntori
• Töölö Library Square
• Nordenskiöld Square
• Laajalahti Square
• Kivitorppa Square
• West Haaga Square

On-street parking spaces removed from Topeliuksenkatu and Runeberginkatu as a result of the construction will be replaced by introducing angled parking on side streets in Töölö. Angled parking will be provided on Ilmarinkatu, Messeniuksenkatu, Päivärinnankatu, Stenbäckinkatu and Töölönkatu.
