About Viikki–Malmi Light Rail
The Viikki–Malmi Light Rail connects the Kumpula campus, Viikki Science Park, and Malmi Hospital, offering a new and efficient public transport connection. The project significantly improves the accessibility of these areas.
Additionally, the project will improve cycling infrastructure by building high-quality bike paths and renewing municipal infrastructure. The Viikki–Malmi Light Rail is part of Helsinki’s future transport system that sustainably meets the needs of a growing city.

16 April, 2025 Helsinki City Council approved the Viikki–Malmi Light Rail general plan
31 March, 2025 Helsinki City Board proposed to the City Council to approve the general plan of the Viikki–Malmi Light Rail for further planning

Schedule
Infrastrucure Programme Helsinki is preparing the project plan for the Viikki–Malmi Light Rail, which will be taken to political decision-making for an actual implementation decision. The general plan for the Viikki–Malmi Light Rail has been approved on April 16, 2025. The project schedule is expected to be confirmed by the end of 2025.
