Pitäjänmäki – Haaga
A new tram line is being built in the Pitäjänmäki and Haaga areas, while the surrounding streets, municipal infrastructure and transport connections are being upgraded. Construction is focused particularly on the Vihdintie corridor, the Valimo area and the development of the Pitäjänmäki Baana cycling route. The works will improve public transport connections, walking and cycling conditions, and support the area’s future development.

Vihdintie
Construction period: June 2026 – summer 2029
As part of the West Helsinki Light Rail project, Vihdintie will be transformed from a traffic-oriented road into an urban boulevard. A new tram line will be built in the centre of the street, with traffic lanes as well as pedestrian and cycling routes on both sides. The project will improve public transport connections, walking and cycling conditions, and support the area’s future development.
In the northern section of Vihdintie (between the Kaupintie junction and the Vihdintie bridge), construction includes the tramway, overhead line system and street environment. Works in the northern section will begin in August 2026 with excavation, rock blasting and the renewal of underground municipal infrastructure. Construction will proceed in phases, starting on the western side of the street and then moving to the eastern side. Work on the western side is expected to continue until summer 2027, after which construction will begin on the eastern side.
In the southern section of Vihdintie (between the Vihdintie bridge and the Haaga roundabout), construction will follow the same sequence of work. It will begin with excavation and rock blasting, followed by the renewal of underground municipal infrastructure. In the southern section, work will start on the eastern side of the street before moving to the western side.
Once completed, Vihdintie will have two-way cycle tracks on both sides of the street, two traffic lanes in each direction, and a tram line running in the centre.
Vihdintie Bridge and the Pitäjänmäki Baana
Construction period: March 2026 – summer 2029
A new tram bridge is being built near Valimo station, while the surrounding station area is also being upgraded. Construction began in March 2026 with the demolition of the western Vihdintie bridge. A new, wider bridge will be built to replace the old one. In summer 2027, work will move to the eastern bridge, which will also be demolished and rebuilt. In the final stage of bridge construction, the two bridges will be connected.
The project will also improve walking and cycling connections and enhance the station’s role as an interchange between rail and tram services. A new staircase and lift connection will be built from Vihdintie to Valimo station. Utility works will be carried out along the Pitäjänmäki Baana cycling route, which passes beneath the Vihdintie bridge, as part of the bridge construction. Reconstruction of the Pitäjänmäki Baana will begin in autumn 2027.
Haaga Roundabout
Construction period: June 2026 – autumn 2028
As part of the West Helsinki Light Rail project, the current Haaga roundabout will be transformed into Länsi-Haaga Square. In the future, light rail line 14 will run through the square from Vihdintie to Huopalahdentie, crossing light rail line 15. Extensive changes will be made to the street environment in the Haaga roundabout area. The existing pedestrian and cycling underpasses in the area will be removed. The roadways will be moved further away from the centre of the future square, expanding the current roundabout area.
According to the current schedule, construction will begin in July 2026 around Bensa-asemankuja and in the northwestern parts of the current roundabout. The works will start with earthworks and the renewal of underground municipal infrastructure. During the summer, rock excavation will also begin in the area between Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie. In autumn 2026, work will begin at the Pitäjänmäentie junction area.
In early 2027, the construction area will expand to the southern parts of the current roundabout on the Vihdintie side, where underground municipal infrastructure and street structures will be renewed. In 2028, construction of the tramway through Länsi-Haaga Square towards Huopalahdentie will begin.

Pedestrian and cycling routes are closed on the following sections:
- The eastern side of Huopalahdentie, between the Haaga roundabout and Vanha Viertotie
- The Huopalahdentie underpass
- The pedestrian and cycling route between Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie
In the Haaga roundabout area, pedestrians and cyclists can still pass through by using the other road crossings and underpasses.

The exits from the Haaga roundabout towards Pitäjänmäentie are closed.
- Pitäjänmäentie can be reached from the direction of Vihdintie via Valimokuja or Karvaamokuja.
- From the direction of Huopalahdentie, Pitäjänmäentie can be accessed via Vanha Viertotie.
Pedestrians and Cyclists
The pedestrian and cycling path from Vihdintie to Pitäjänmäentie at Piimäenpuisto is closed during the closure period.
- The pedestrian and cycling path on the south side of Pitäjänmäentie remains open as usual.
- From Pitäjänmäentie, Vihdintie can be reached via Valimotie or Höyläämötie, using Karvaamokuja or Valimokuja.
- From Pitäjänmäentie, Huopalahdentie can be reached via Vanha Viertotie or by using the route along the south side of Pitäjänmäentie.
Public Transport and Stops
During the closure, bus routes 59, 200, 227N, 231N and 235N will operate in both directions via Valimotie, Karvaamokuja and Vihdintie.
- Kutomotie stop (H1516), serving services towards the city centre and bus 59 towards Herttoniemi, will not be served during the closure. The stop will, however, continue to be served by bus routes 25 and 30.
- The following stops along the diversion route will remain in service:
- Karvaamokuja stops (H1252 and H1563) on Vihdintie
- Valimotie stop (H1601) on Valimotie
