Pitäjänmäentie between Haaga Roundabout and Vanha viertotie to be closed to traffic from 10 August

Pitäjänmäentie will be closed to traffic between Haaga Roundabout and Vanha viertotie on Monday, 10 August. The closure will remain in place until the end of 2026. During the closure, municipal infrastructure along Pitäjänmäentie will be renewed and the new Länsiympyrä junction will be built.

The current Haaga Roundabout area will eventually be expanded into Länsiympyrä (link to the street plan), and the West-Helsinki Light Rail project will carry out the changes to the street alignment. During the closure, the underpass bridge on Pitäjänmäentie will be partially demolished. The underpass will eventually be replaced by a pedestrian crossing.

The extensive construction work will be carried out during a closure lasting approximately four months. Closing the street completely will allow the work to be completed significantly faster than if the route were kept partially open. Previous tramway projects have provided positive experiences of shortening construction times by closing streets completely.

Traffic will be diverted via Vanha viertotie and Valimotie during the closure

While Pitäjänmäentie is closed between Haaga Roundabout and Vanha viertotie, motor traffic and walking and cycling routes will be diverted to temporary routes. Pitäjänmäentie and Haaga Roundabout can be accessed via either Vanha viertotie or Valimotie.

During the closure, Pitäjänmäentie will not be available to motor traffic between Haaga Roundabout and Vanha viertotie. The walking and cycling route from Vihdintie to Pitäjänmäentie at Piimäenpuisto will be closed, but the walking and cycling route on the southern side of Pitäjänmäentie will remain open as usual. Light rail line 15 will operate normally during the closure.

A temporary roundabout will be introduced at the junction of Vanha viertotie and Huopalahdentie

A temporary roundabout will be built at the junction of Vanha viertotie and Huopalahdentie to improve the flow of motor traffic during the closure of Pitäjänmäentie.

The temporary roundabout will be introduced on Monday, 10 August. Before then, work required for the roundabout will be carried out at the junction, including paving and changes to traffic lanes.

Effects on travel

Walking and cycling

The walking and cycling route from Vihdintie to Pitäjänmäentie at Piimäenpuisto will be closed for the duration of the works.
The walking and cycling route on the southern side of Pitäjänmäentie will remain open as usual.
Vihdintie can be reached from Pitäjänmäentie via Valimotie or Höyläämötie and then via Karvaamokuja or Valimokuja.
Huopalahdentie can be reached from Pitäjänmäentie via Vanha viertotie or the southern side of Pitäjänmäentie.

Public transport and stops

During the closure, buses 59, 200, 227N, 231N and 235N will run in both directions via Valimotie, Karvaamokuja and Vihdintie. The Kutomotie stop (H1516) will not be served in the direction of the city centre or, on bus 59, in the direction of Herttoniemi. However, the stop will remain in use for buses 25 and 30.

The Karvaamokuja stops (H1252 and H1563) on Vihdintie and the Valimotie stop (H1601) on Valimotie will be served along the diversion route.

Motor vehicles

The exits from Haaga Roundabout towards Pitäjänmäentie will be closed.
Pitäjänmäentie can be reached from the direction of Vihdintie via Valimokuja or Karvaamokuja.
Pitäjänmäentie can be reached from the direction of Huopalahdentie via Vanha viertotie.

The current Haaga Roundabout will become Länsiympyrä and Länsi-Haaga Square

The Haaga Roundabout area will change significantly as a result of the construction of the West-Helsinki Light Rail project. The current roundabout will be expanded, creating space within it for the future Länsi-Haaga Square. Light rail line 15, which is already in operation, and the future West-Helsinki Light Rail line 14 will meet at the square, allowing passengers to transfer smoothly between the two light rail lines.

Länsiympyrä will continue to be an important transport hub in Helsinki. Compared with the current Haaga Roundabout, the area will change from a roundabout for motor traffic into an urban, block-like area where motor traffic, public transport and pedestrians move at the same level.
