Munkkivuori-Munkkiniemi

Munkkivuori-Munkkiniemi

In the Munkkivuori and Munkkiniemi area, road-like thoroughfares will be transformed into an urban streetscape that combines high-quality public transport with efficient routes for walking, cycling, and driving. As part of the West Helsinki Light Rail project, municipal infrastructure on Munkkiniemen puistotie will be renewed, the Munkkiniemi Baana cycling route will be upgraded, and municipal infrastructure works will be carried out in the Laajalahdenaukio area. Accessibility in the area will be further improved when Tram Line 13 is extended from Pasila to Munkkivuori in 2029.

Munkkiniemen puistotie

Huopalahdentie

Construction period: June 2026–autumn 2028

Construction works on Huopalahdentie began with preparatory works in the Turunväylä area in June 2026. These works enable the traffic arrangements required when construction begins on Turunväylä. More extensive construction works on the Huopalahdentie side will begin in autumn 2026 and continue into early 2027.

In the northern section of Huopalahdentie, between Haagan roundabout and Lapinmäentie, street construction works related to municipal infrastructure will begin in early 2027. Renewal of the street area will start on the western side of the road, while renewal of the electricity line will initially be carried out simultaneously on the eastern side. The underpass near Tali Bowling Hall will be renovated during 2027. According to the current schedule, the works will begin in late spring and be completed in autumn.

The underpass leading to the Munkkiniemi shopping centre will be repaired and upgraded as part of the West Helsinki Light Rail construction project. A tram stop will be built at the location of the underpass, and access to the stop will be provided directly from the underpass via stairs. Construction works in the area of the Munkkiniemi shopping centre and the Lapinmäentie intersection will begin in spring 2027 and be completed in autumn 2028.

In the Turunväylä and Niemenmäki areas, the alignment of Huopalahdentie will change significantly compared with the current situation, as the existing straight road will curve towards Turunväylä. This change will enable future land use development in the Niemenmäki area. Construction of the new road alignment will begin in early 2027 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.

From Tietokuja to the Huopalahdentie–Paciuksenkatu intersection area, construction will proceed in phases from north to south, one side of the street at a time. Municipal infrastructure works will be carried out on both sides of Huopalahdentie, after which the tramway will be constructed in the central section of the road. Works on the section of Huopalahdentie between Rakuunantie and Perustie will begin in spring 2027 on the eastern side of the road.

Turku motorway and Kivitorppa Square

Construction period: June 2026–autumn 2027

Turunväylä and its junctions on the Huopalahdentie side will be transformed from the current motorway-like road environment into a T-junction that will become part of the renewed urban environment. Construction works in the Turunväylä area will begin at the end of June 2026.

The first work area will be the extensive area at the junction leading from Helsinki towards Turku, where earthworks, rock excavation, and the construction of a new road section will be carried out. In autumn 2026, the work area will move to the junction area leading from Turku towards Helsinki, and vehicle traffic will then already be using the new road alignment. Construction works within the Turunväylä road area will be completed in summer 2027. Construction of the tramway on Huopalahdentie in the Turunväylä junction area will continue until 2028.

Kivitorppa Square will be built below Tietokuja, at the location of the current Kivitorppa field. The idea behind the square is to introduce more greenery alongside Huopalahdentie and create a space for stopping, relaxation, and recreation within the urban environment.

Naantalintie

Construction period: Jule 2026–spring 2028

It has been decided that the relocation of Naantalintie and the municipal infrastructure works on the street will be carried out as part of the West Helsinki Light Rail project. The street will be relocated approximately 20 metres further north as the Munkkivuori shopping centre area is expanded and a new apartment building is constructed next to it. At the same time, ageing municipal infrastructure along Naantalintie will be renewed. The existing Naantalintie will remain in use while the new street area is being constructed.

A new retaining wall will be built along Naantalintie in spring 2027. The construction of the street’s surface structures will be coordinated with the Munkkivuori shopping centre project. The street’s finishing works will be carried out in 2028 in coordination with the works at the shopping centre. The West Helsinki Light Rail project and the development project for the Munkkivuori shopping centre block are working closely together to coordinate schedules and construction phases.

Munkkiniemen puistotie and Laajalahti Square

Construction period: August 2027–autumn 2028

Trams are already operating in the central section of Munkkiniemen puistotie, but as part of the West Helsinki Light Rail project, municipal infrastructure on Munkkiniemen puistotie will be renewed. According to the current schedule, the works will begin on the southern side of Munkkiniemen puistotie in August 2027, with construction moving to the northern side of the street in spring 2028. The overall project will be completed towards the end of 2028.

As part of the municipal infrastructure works, the Munkkiniemi Baana cycling route will also be improved, and municipal infrastructure works will be carried out in the Laajalahti Square area.

Huopalahti Flood Gate

Construction period: autumn 2027–spring 2029

A flood gate will be constructed next to the Munkkiniemi bridge to help prepare for the impacts of climate change. A cycling bridge will be built on top of the flood gate as part of the Munkkiniemi Baana cycling route.

The schedules presented on this page are preliminary and may change as the project progresses. This page was last updated on 7 July 2026.
