Preparatory works

West-Helsinki Light Rail will start preparatory works in summer 2025. The purpose of these works is to ensure a smooth transition into the implementation phase in spring 2026. Preparatory works include municipal engineering tasks in Lassila and ground surveys.

Municipal engineering works in Lassila

Municipal engineering works will take place in Lassila’s edge park, involving relocation of the existing water utility network. These works include excavation with machinery, soil transportation, and water utility installations.

Additionally, noisy activities such as sheet pile wall installation, wedging, and piling will be conducted. The site will install noise-reducing barriers between residential buildings and the work area.

The daily working hours are listed in the table below.

Work phaseWorking hoursRemarks
Excavation, transportation, water utility installationMon–Fri 7 am–6 pm
Noisy activities (sheet pile installation, piling, wedging)Mon–Fri 8 am–4 pmLassi daycare’s nap time will be respected; breaks will occur during noisy work.

Site traffic follows the route Kaupintie–Vaakatie–Punnuspolku. The working area and temporary routes are shown on the map below.

Works will begin with fencing off the construction area and setting up the site office in week 23/2025 (starting from 2 June). Construction works will commence on Monday, 9 June 2025, week 24/2025.

The municipal engineering works carried out by the West-Helsinki Light Rail project will be completed by December 2025 at the latest. Following their completion, the local electricity grid company will begin underground cabling works in the area. These works are related to dismantling the overhead power line between Pitäjänmäki and Kannelmäki.

Ground surveys

The ground survey programme for the West-Helsinki Light Rail will commence in summer 2025, with the aim to start these surveys as early as June 2025. A more detailed schedule will be communicated as soon as it is finalised. The ground surveys involve drilling boreholes into streets or land areas using drilling rigs, from which soil samples are collected. These surveys provide detailed information on soil conditions, enabling more cost-effective planning and construction.

Ground surveys will be conducted across the entire West-Helsinki Light Rail project area, focusing especially on initial construction sites planned for early spring 2026: Vihdintie, Haaga roundabout, Turunväylä interchange area, Munkkiniemen puistotie, Töölöntori, and Linnakoskenkatu.
